Conception and Pregnancy Care
HIV + Perinatal Care
The Children’s Hospital Immunodeficiency Program (CHIP) helps expectant mothers with HIV obtain state-of-the-art services and support. Our focus is three-fold:
- Collaboration with referring physicians and care providers
- Coordination of care for optimal outcomes for mother and baby.
- Compassion for pregnant women and their families.
CHIP’s multidisciplinary team is headquartered at the Children’s Hospital in Denver and affiliated with University Hospital and Denver Health Medical Center. Team members include physicians specializing in Infectious Disease, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) and Internal Medicine; nurse practitioners; clinical social workers; pharmacists; developmental neuropsychologists and dieticians– all with extensive expertise in HIV.
Key benefits of this HIV-specific partnership include
- Multidisciplinary approach assuring complex emotional and social needs are met.
- Intensive family support and services coupled with focused patient education, counseling and referral to HIV-related community services.
- Comprehensive care plans and travel assistance for women living outside the Metro Denver area
- Educations for health-care professionals including mini-sabbaticals at Children’s and in-service training for office and hospital staff
CHIP Services are Unique

- Our coordinated care model allows mother and child to be seen at the same time, enhancing compliance and reducing family stress
- CHIP provides women and their children access to clinical trials and new therapies
- We respect the existing provider/patient relationships while assuring that current standards of care are being met.
HOPE Program
The HOPE Program (Healthier Options for the Parenting Experience) was developed in 2005 as a collaborative program between CHIP and University of Colorado ID Group Practice in an effort to provide comprehensive reproductive health counseling to persons living with HIV. Regardless of HIV status, HOPE can provide consultation services and recommendations for persons who wish to become pregnant, have a child with their HIV-positive partner, or consider alternative options for parenting.
